RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."
In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
